Video Production Editing Exercise
#1
Avid Non-Linear Editing
Overview: Each student will edit a dramatic scene on the Avid computers using "The Holdup" editing exercise.
Using the raw footage provided by the TV Studio, students will arrange shots and scenes in a logical and dramatic sequence .
Many variations of the scene are possible. Music must be added for mood or effect. Students need a DVD-R
of their own for this exercise to turn in.
Procedures:
- Begin by checking out a window dub DVD from the TV Studio to review and create a paper EDL. Using the EDL sheet provided here, write down the edits you plan to make later in the editing session. This paper EDL will be turned in with your DVD. Don't lose it.
- Reserve one of the following workstations at the TV Studio: (2-hour limit
per day)
Edit Suites 1 or 3
MacIntosh computers in TV Studio newsroom lab
- Make a folder with your name and class as the label on a Videodata drive. (i.e. pace_coem232)
- Create a new external project using DV 30i setting in the folder you just added. Use your name plus the word "holdup" for project name. (i.e. pace_holdup)
- Import your files. (Create a new bin is none appear at top left.) Right click on bin, choose import. Go to Videodata drive and find "HoldupEx" folder. Import all files in this folder.
- Your bin will now have the files you need for editing. You will need to import music for the background theme. You may use music from the TV Studio Audio computer on the network.
- Files were captured so you can see the clapstick - however, in some cases the clapstick does not appear at all or is at the end of the clip. There may be some footage left from the previous clip just prior to the clapstick.
- Double click on files to place them in the source monitor for trimming.
- The opening shot should fade in from black. Use the dissolve transition
for this in the effects tab of the project window. You may also use the quick transition button for this.
- You may arrange the shots in the order you think tells the story best.
You must use most, if not all, of the shots as necessary.
You may use transitions between shots as appropriate, but remember this is
not a music video.
- A music soundtrack should be added to set the mood for the scene. Make sure music does not drown out the dialogue. (The TV Studio has many background music CDs to choose from.)
- Project should have an opening slate for 5 seconds - then 5 seconds of black before the first video shot.
- When you have completed editing your project - you will need to export it for DVD. Choose File, Export, and select the preset "Quicktime for DVD" or "Fast Export for Quicktime".
- Use the DVD burning software on your computer to complete the project. (Encore for Windows - Burn for Mac).
Label your DVD with your name and the project title.
Turn the project in on the due date as well as your paper EDL..
